Creating the Legacy
V&A Law was founded in 1980 under the leadership of young lawyers including retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio T. Carpio, F. Arthur L. Villaraza, and Raoul R. Angangco. Established on a foundation of legal excellence, integrity, and strategic advocacy, the Firm quickly distinguished itself for its strength in litigation and complex dispute resolution.
Over the years, V&A Law expanded into a multidisciplinary practice, offering expertise in corporate and commercial law, litigation and dispute resolution, intellectual property, and labor and employment. The Firm has been involved in numerous landmark and high-profile cases that have helped shape Philippine jurisprudence. Today, V&A Law continues to be recognized for its rigorous and disciplined practice, industry insight, and steadfast commitment to advancing its clients’ interests in a rapidly evolving legal and business landscape.

In 2023, V&A Law entered a new chapter with Sylvette Y. Tankiang as the new Managing Partner of the Firm, the first female managing partner since the Firm’s establishment in 1980.
In September 2024, Raoul R. Angangco was appointed as the Chairman and CEO of V&A Law with Juanito L. Sañosa, Jr. as the Co-Managing Partner. This generational transition reinforced the Firm’s commitment to continuity, adaptability, and forward-looking leadership.

December 14, 1949 – September 14, 2024 Co-Founder of the Firm F. Arthur L. Villaraza was a founding partner of V&A Law and one of the most respected lawyers in Philippine legal history. Throughout his distinguished career, he was known for his exceptional courtroom advocacy, strategic brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law and his clients. He handled numerous high-profile, complex, and landmark cases involving corporate, regulatory, and even constitutional issues, leaving an enduring mark on Philippine history. Revered by clients and peers alike, F. Arthur L. Villaraza was also a dedicated mentor who shaped generations of young lawyers through his exacting standards and passion for legal excellence. His legacy continues to define the Firm’s values and practice, reflecting his lifelong dedication to law, advocacy, and the legal profession. "The Firm succeeds never by timid action but in the relentless pursuit of its goals in the boldest manner, even at times to the extent of being outrageous." Known for his divergent and high-stakes solutions to legal quagmires, Atty. Villaraza continuously leads the Firm to become one of the best legal practices in the Philippines and in the world. More currently, Atty. Villaraza expends effort in mentoring the Firm’s young lawyers, instilling in them the drive and desire to become the best in their fields regardless of all challenges and oppositions. Through the years, the Firm has developed an unmatched capability to launch and sustain coordinated and multi-pronged legal campaigns that have placed it not only at the forefront of decisive changes in the nation’s legal field but, oftentimes, at the driver’s wheel. Undoubtedly, it is Atty. Villaraza’s untimid and unapologetic drive for excellence that has pushed the Firm to the heights that it has reached. He is a Trustee of the Foundation for the Enhancement of the Legal Education and has served as Director for Asia-Pacific of the Mackrell International and as President of the University of the Philippines Law Alumni Association. He is also an active member of various bar associations, such as the International Law Society, ASEAN Law Association of the Philippines, Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Philippine Bar Association, and the Philippine Constitution Association. Atty. Villaraza earned his Bachelor of Laws from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1975, where he graduated 3rd in his class and was a member of the Order of the Purple Feather Honor Society. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in the same year. He also holds a degree in Bachelor of Arts major in Philosophy, which he earned from the same university in 1971.
