Villaraza & Angangco Law’s Ma. Sophia Editha Cruz-Abrenica gave a webinar entitled “Patenting Fundamentals: Intellectual Property Protection of Research Output” on 08 September 2023. The webinar was part of a series of webinars focused on Nanotechnology hosted by Nanohubs, under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technnology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). The theme of the webinar series was “Empowering Young Filipino Researchers for an Emerging technology Ready Philippines”.
In the webinar, Atty. Cruz-Abrenica highlighted the importance of intellectual property protection for science research output and gave step-by-step best practices to ensure that the products of research will be patentable. She explained the basic philosophies behind patenting, inventorship and concomitant rights, the requirements for patentability of inventions, an overview of the patent application process, as well as possible alternatives to patent protection. The webinar aims to provide scientific researchers with a ‘patenting mindset’ that will empower them to aim for patentable inventions in their researches.
